More from JAR

JAR continued to write from Italy.......

"I do not regret spending one minute on learningItalian. It has allowed me to feel comfortable reading menus, street signs, store opening hours,train/bus/airline schedules ,and some limited conversations about what the bunny had told me.
I have found that the people are pleased that I try and they help me even though most of them here in Florence speak English. I think they feel that at least I have met them halfway, they have learned half of the normal English and I have learned half of their language even though technically I am in THEIRcountry and it is my responsibilty to learn their language complete.

When I was a child my father would drive us around to look at a lot of stuff that we really did not want to see. Then when we got to something we really wanted to appreciate he would not let us out of the car. His answer would be "I can see it from here".
Well quite bluntly that does not work for me. I want to touch it, hold it, climb on it, smell it, taste it, and now listen to it and talk to it.
Think about it, which is better - a picture of a hamburger in a magazine or siting at In and Out and eating it while it is still hot and dripping?
Connecting in the native language is like you are making love to the environment around you.
It is just not the same if you are not present for the festivities.

My comment :
Yup, I agree. Maybe its the generation thing about our parents. Maybe for them, looking is all they were allowed to do when they were young. Sometimes I do the same. But now after my life experiences, I know that you need to do more than just look sometimes.

More of JAR's Italy

RJAR emailed me about the delicious food he had in Italy. Here it is.....

JAR said..............

"My niece recommended the Cattedral Santa MariaFiore? (dome cathedral)and Acqua Al 2 to eat. Those are the first places bunny and I went. These were absolutely fantastic.
A Japanese girl thought the bunny was so cute she wanted a picture, so I got one too.It was 463 steps to the top of the dome, as long as you do not have claustrophobia, acrophobia, orbeathlessphobia, you will be fine.
The views arespectacular even though it is cold and raining. That also means there are not many tourists. Back to Acqua Al 2, it is simply number 2 on DellaAcqua Via just down a small street from the dome. They have an chef's choice assortment of 5 pasta firstcourses which the waitress allowed me to pick one on my own, canneloni e spinaci. This was owowowowowowowow.
My next favorite was bolognese vegetarian and then one made with pumpkin. I had a filet of steak which was something like Filleto Aceto Balsam. It means filet with balsamic vinegar. It came coveredwith the sauce, a dark brown, it looked like achocolate steak dessert.
This meal I think was the very best in my life.
I would ride the plane again for15 hours just to eat. "

My comments:
Wow...lucky him!!!! I too would travel half the world if I was guaranteed a saliva drooling food.

new news

It took me a while to get over the cough remnants of my bout with flu. The whole house was down with it. Now I am generally recovered and alot healthier. I appreciate my health even more.
JAR is on yet another trip to Italy. Some people just get so lucky with their jobs. (read: envy, envy, envy). He has emailed me a couple of times. He sounds happy and that is certainly well deserved.
My condo is coming up just fine. The master bedroom is fully furnished as is the living room and the dinning room. My study is half-done and I havent even begun on the guest room. The utility room is growing each day with all kinds of cleaning stuff. My kitchen is growing in stuff too. I have done quite a bit of cooking and baked some walnut fudge in the gleaming oven once. The balcony overlooks the entrance and I can see guests coming in and out very clearly. My sibling's kids and I have gone swimming acouple of times and yes, we really enjoyed each session. I have bought a couple of carpets and the place looks quite homely now. I have put up some pics on the mantle...me at 7 months, me and my parents on my graduation, my nephews and nieces baby pics, etc
I like being a house owner.
